Industrial water treatment systems are used in many industries to optimize water-based industrial processes. These processes may include heating, cooling, cleaning, rinsing, and processing. Water treatment is used to reduce operating costs as well as the risks associated with these processes. Poor or inadequate treatment allows water to contact the surfaces of pipes and containment vessels. Cooling towers are also susceptible to scale and corrosion. If left untreated, the warm and dirty water in a cooling tank becomes susceptible to bacterial growth. Legionnaire’s disease is a serious, and often fatal, consequence of such contamination.

If proper wastewater management measures are not taken at a factory, for example, the water surrounding the area may become unsafe to treat. Industrial water purification systems are a safeguard of sorts to ensure that this does not happen. Of course, another important factor when working with water is waste. Water used in many industrial applications may be reusable. This wastewater must first be treated, however, by means of domestic wastewater treatment. Reusing water that has been used for other on-site applications saves companies money by lowering water consumption charges, reducing effluent water discharge, and aiding heat recovery in subsequent treatments.
Industrial water treatment is designed to address four major areas of concern: scaling, microbiological activity, scaling, and the disposal of residual wastewater.
Scaling: This occurs when conditions (i.e. chemistry, temperature) allow dissolved mineral salts from the water to precipitate and form solid deposits. The deposits may be mobile or stationary. Stationary mineral deposits collect in layers on the system’s metal surfaces. Scale results in less efficient heat exchange, which in turn results in loss of energy efficiency. Scale build up also narrows pipe widths, making it more difficult to pump water through.
Corrosion: This occurs when metal oxidizes. Over time, corrosion can compromise the integrity of affected equipment. Corrosion can cause problems similar to those resulting from scale, but it can also cause leaks. In a pressurized system, such leaks are potentially catastrophic.
Microbes: Microbes thrive in untreated cooling water. The warm, nutrient-rich environment within wet cooling towers makes them ripe for microbial growth. Dust, small insects, grass, fungal spores, and other undesirables can collect in the water if it is not properly treated. In fact, most outbreaks of Legionnaire’s are due to improperly treated cooling towers, especially microbes in sewage treatment.
